RSS: Google Reader Introduction

RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a way to publish and subscribe to blogs and other forms of information. It works very much like those stock ticker machines you see in old movies—a steady stream of blog posts, Twitter tweets, and notifications from a variety of online sources. News organizations publish their feeds, as do businesses, entertainment companies, blogs, and photo sharing sites, just to name a few. As a small business, you may find RSS feeds a great way to keep up with what’s going on in your industry or your community.

We’ll be providing several posts and videos about RSS over the next couple of weeks. The first one is just below, and shows you how to get started using Google Reader. There are dozens of other feed readers, and some email programs and browsers actually provide feed aggregation services too. These include Outlook, Thunderbird, Safari, Opera, and others. And there are dozens of free and commercial feed readers, like NewsGator, NetVibes, PageFlakes, and FeedReader.
